The course comprises a systematic study of nomenclature, structure, properties, and reactions of aliphatic compounds. Attention is given to recent developments in interpretation of structure and reaction mechanisms. The course will address the basic concepts in organic chemistry for students who are planning to study medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or health professions. The course will concentrate on the hybridization theory, molecular geometry and polarity of the covalent bond. Nomenclature of alkanes, alkyl halides, alkenes, and alkynes as well as their reactivity and mechanism of reactions are included. Stereoisomerism and optical activity will be given special attention since biologically active compounds are often chiral. Oxygen containing functional groups (alcohols, ethers and epoxides) and alicyclic hydrocarbons will be addressed too.
