Abstract :

The Miswak is a teeth cleaning agent made from the Salvadora persica tree. It is widely used especially in the Muslim world. It is recommended by the Islam to use Miswak due to its advantages in human health particularly the mouth cavity. Benzalisothiocyanate is the major component of Salvadora persica. This compound exhibits rapid and strong bactericidal activity against those bacteria of oral cavity. The aim of this research to find out the antibacterial activity of Al-Miswak against other types of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Different concentrations of Al-Miswak were used ranging from 0.5% to  10%. No antibacterial activity was observed against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at a concentration equals to or less than 10%. However, the Miswak may have an antibacterial effect against these bacteria at a higher concentration, but the toxicity effect of plant at a higher concentration should be considered.
