Abstract
The use of green tea and herbal weight loss tea is increasing worldwide due to rising rates of obesity. There are concerns about the safety and quality of tea products due to its rising in it consumption in last few years all over the world. Eighteen samples of a green tea or a packed weight loss herbal tea of widely used brands in Palestine were tested for heavy metal and microbial contamination. The results showed that many of the tested samples have toxic metals like chrome and lead that are above the allowable limits. Moreover, many of the tested samples have microbial contamination due to improper handling and storage. This study is alarming to all the responsible authorities including MoH to take immediate corrective action such as quality control testing, auditing and registration of marketed tea products.
